Buried deep in Half-Price Books & Record's website are two pages of coupons valid for 20 to 50% off (depending on the day) this weekend at HP. This is apparently because a new store is opening in Irving,Texas but the coupons are valid at any HP.

Just don't use them to buy anything that I want!

Or better yet, buy some of their old Toscanini LPs and offer them for $1,000 each on Ebay (worn out and they skip, but by God, you can still hear the Old Man humming along with the orchestra).

Thanks for posting this. I just picked up the 4-CD M&A set of Furtwangler wartime Beethoven recordings for $10 at the store on South Lamar in Austin using the 50% off coupon. If any other Austinites are interested, there were at least two other copies of this set still available there as of about 1:30 this afternoon, along with two or three copies of the M&A Abendroth set that was mentioned here a few days ago. Remember that the coupon is only valid today, however.

Of course, because of the snowstorm, I couldn't go, *sigh*

But I guess it saved me money, especially since I recently put in an order at BMG with this deal I found

Glad you were able to use it. I took advantage of it myself to get the Barshai Shosty cycle for all of $12.50, and the 6 CD Kna Bruckner set for a mere $15! -Rich

Wow. Nice buy, Marcus. Glad I already own that set, or I'd be grinding my teeth in a jealous rage. ;-D Did Half Price get in some remaindered M&A product or what?

Me, I probably WOULD have grabbed the Abendroth set; I've been getting curious about his work. If I'd had the day off, I might have driven into Austin. Haven't been to the South Lamar store in several months. Have they gotten in any decent vinyl lately? Last time I looked they were a bit slim in the classical LP selection, especially in the 99-cent understock.

Cheers,

Dirk in San Antonio

I don't recall much about the South Lamar store. How does it compare to the one on the Drag (both in terms of books and music)?

Thanks,

Well worth exploring, especially, like Furtwangler, the wartime recordings.

The South Lamar store has a marginally better CD section, the Drag location a better vinyl section. With respect to books, the Drag store's selection appears to be in some cases equal, but in several cases superior (e.g. the music and philosophy sections) to that of the South Lamar location.
