Is it just me, or are complete triads (inversions in this case) easier to play in sequential steps than 6ths? It seems to me that the 'hollowness' of the 6th is harder for my hand to travel the keyboard than adding the middle note. It could be both a physical (three-point touchdown with the landing gear) and intellectual comparison (something vague about the 6th, compared to a complete chord)?

Perhaps you are finding it hard to measure the 6th accurately, and the extra note in the middle helps stabilize the shape for you. Practice can overcome this, of course.
