Boulez's cummings ist der dichter (1970) got its title from a similar mistake. When the piece, a ten-minute cantata for chorus and chamber orchestra, was new, it was slated for a premiere in Germany, and the secretary responsible for acquiring program notes from the composers to be featured on the concert asked Boulez for information on the piece. 'Just say that cummings is the poet,' he wrote back, apparently in less than perfect Deutsch, and the secretary thought the title of the piece was cummings ist der dichter. Boulez liked the title and it stuck.

The funniest goof I ever saw in a CD jacket or catalogue was in a Fonit-Cetra catalogue a few years back in which the title of the Rossini opera, 'L'Occasione fa il Ladro' ('Opportunity Makes the Thief' was printed as 'L'Occasione fa il Lardo'. It is well known that Rossini, a noted gourmand, became extremely corpulent later in life. 'Lardo' actually does mean 'lard' in Italian.

Has there been an operatic version of 'James and the Giant Peach'?

Sounds like a perfect task for Oliver Knussen ('Where the Wild Things Are', 'Higglety Pigglety Pop'.

I even know the perfect place to stage it: Gaffney, South Carolina, which has a giant peach (actually a water tower in disguise) alongside highway

The Japanese are no slouches when it comes to these. How about the label 'Karl Boehm FUN Club' and the pirate CD with recordings conducted by 'Rafael Kubelik and the BARBARIAN Radio Symphony.'
