I am thinking of buying a digital piano for my 17 year old son. (We have a regular upright which we will keep). He is in a band (2 acoustic guitar players and him on keyboards- not hard rock type music).

We rented a used Yamaha P150 and find it is very heavy. It does have built in speakers. We want to spend around $1,000 but could pay a bit more. Portability is key. Do they all have built in speakers? Is this desirable?

Please advise on what would be a good portable digital piano. He will be playing an old Everett upright at home. He may also take the digital to college with him eventually.

Yamaha P-80/90 doesn't have speakers and is lighter. If he has a keyboard amp already, then he's all set.

You wouldn't want him gigging with the speakers in the keyboard without an amp, unless he was doing a party in someone's living room.

If you're near Detroit, I can go shopping with you and him.

Hi, I've the same problem for my son who use actually a small roland synth. In France, I've selected four models but have only been able to test two. I'm waiting for further informations about other models. All models selected have the following imperative features: Nearly keyboard feeling, realist piano sound, midi, price around $1000

Roland fp5 - tested . very fine sound, very realistic keyboard despite of a course slightly lower than real piano. USB interface, midi ,255 gm2 sounds Yamaha p120 - tested . very fine sound (slight aliasing on mediums), fine keyboard harder than fp5 (harder than real piano) Gem Prp8 - not tested Roland RD 170 - not tested but seem very interesting with advanced midi functions, cheaper than fp5 (really, I would like to have a comparison betwenn RD170 and Fp5) Kawai ES1 - tested by my son, fine keyboard but he doesn't like piano sound quality Korg SP200 - not tested

I've just seen a Roland fp2(with US and will search for further info.

Good luck

gege
