On a recent re-listen I was very disappointed by his 9th. While I find the distinctive sounds made by his orchestra enticing - almost worth keeping for that reason alone - I found what he does with it tame, especially the third movement, which is one of the most cautious, level-headed performances I've encountered; all wrong, to these ears.

These are all amongst the best recordings of these works:

Pictures at an Exhibition, coupled with various other showpieces.

Dvorak symphonies, esp. New World

Shostakovich symphonies (especially 5 and 10)

I also enjoy a CD of small pieces like the Leonore3 Ouverture, Borodin 'Steppes', and Liszt Les Preludes which may or may not be in this Gold edition in different permutations.

<< > What other CDs are particularly recommended? How is Ancerl's Mahler? >>

Ancerl's Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet excerpts, and the Dvorak 6, are perhaps my favorites among his studio recordings.

More and more I'm finding his live recordings on Tahra and other labels are even more interesting.

His recording of the Dvorak Requiem on DG (Stader/Wagner/Haefliger/Borg, Czech Phil and chorus), recently discussed here, is one of the most stirring and inspired performances of any music in my collection
