I am now posting Sibelius's 2nd and 4th on alt.binaries.music.classical and alt.binaties.mp3.classical.

These are from my own LP transfer.

I am making no claims for the greatness of #2, by the way.

Be sure to read the .nfo file and download the CD covers. You will thus obtain the original liner notes, my commentary, and your very own DelMarva Disc!

you do not have to make any claims for the second symphony. I will. It is an incredbibly musical performance of a very important piece. It is available on a Japanese Decca Cd. The fourth has never made it to CD. It is best heard in a Decca London open reel.

It is very good. Ansermet is a joy in almost anything he conducts. But I have real problems with the ensemble in this particular recording. Listen, for example, at what happens in the scherzo where the vivacissimo returns after the first trio. One of the great bloopers of the stereo era. The first trumpet must have been on dexedrine.

It is available

Mea culpa! It should be 'alt.binaries.sounds.music.classical.'

Thanks so very much for posting the Ansermet Sibelius 2 and 4 on the alt. binaries newsgroups. I notice that the background in my downloads is somewhat more intrusive in 2 than in 4. Was an intermediate tape copy involved?

Glad to help. I will continue to watch for discussions of symphonic recordings that have never made it to CD. If I have made digital transfers, I will post them to the same groups and mention the postings here.

I notice that the background in my downloads

No. Both are straight from London LPs. But my copy of the second was in worse shape than the fourth, even though it has been played less. I am very wary of applying too much noise reduction, lest the high end suffer. But at least the ticks and pops are mostly eliminated.

Please accept my encouragement to post vinyl 'rips' of material never issued on CD. You know my reasons. ;
