Dear friends:

At last! A superb recording of Joachim's 'Hungarian' Violin Concerto

Run to your next classical CD store to buy Rachel Barton's CD, playing it with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Carlos Kalmar on Cedille.

A superb soloist, very sensitive, excellent technique, with great expression, and a superb orchestra conducted by a person that also loves and understands very well this difficult work.

It is coupled with Brahms' Violin Concerto (two CDs for the price of one), and it shows clearly that both Concerti are on the same quality and inspiration level.

The recording's technical quality is also excellent.

Outstanding, highly recommended!!!!!

I'm sure your rave is appropriate, but is the Oliveira/Botstein recording chopped liver? I've enjoyed it immensely over the years.

Dear Paul & friends:

I have all the recordings of this work I could found, from the old Vox (heavily cut) and Louisville LPs (very good), to Botstein's and this new one. In my opinion, this new recording is the best by far......

'... both Concerti are on the same quality and inspiration level.' ???!!! Is it possible you're referring to the compositions themselves, or just the performances? If the former, I'm sorry, but the Joachim barely makes it as a footnote in the history of the violin concerto. Listenable, but just. To even think of comparing it, as a composition, to the Brahms is ludicrous.

But maybe you just meant the performances?

My personal plug for this small, non-for-profit, and local (Chicago) record label that has been putting out some interesting items, including recordings by the very good Russian pianist Dmitry Paperno, who, I believe now makes his home in Chicago and teaches at Depaul University. There is one CD of his Soviet recordings that contains an excellent Rhapsodie Espangnole that I heard on the radio. Mp3 excerpts can be found here:

Dear Terry & friends:

This is exactly the reason because I find this new recording outstanding. Previous recordings of Joachim's Concerto showed it as 'excellent recordings of a minor Concerto'. The new recording shows that it is an 'excellent recording of an outstanding Concerto'.

And that makes a very big difference, a discovery.
