I suspect you meant to type 'Dvorak' instead of 'Brahms.'

Oddly enough, I asked about Dvorak's Op. 96, 'American' Quartet just a few days ago and got a great list of recommendations. If you decide to pursue that one it will be easily available at google.

I have no copies at all and would be interested in several good choices of each I have never used google to find old threads in this news group and when I search on 'dvorak american quartet' I get many answers that don't relate to this group I'd like to know how to do a search to avoid asking for suggestions that recently were answered here could someone show me how would be much appreciated Jeff

Assuming you want a stereo studio recording, there's no need to pay more than the inexpensive Fournier/Szell/DG for the cello concerto. I don't think there's been anything better in the 40 or so years since it was released. This is one of several romantic concertos which have been subjected to The Big Slow-Down of the past few decades, to bad effect (or so I think). Except for Wispelwey's (where the only significant flaw is the slightly drab orchestral sound), I can't think of a recent recording I would recommend. Some - e.g. Ma's - threaten to fall over from lack of momentum in the first movement.

I agree with those. Also Rostropovich/Talich, in very good late-mono sound. The best solo playing of the piece I've heard, though, is probably Heinrich Schiff, unfortunately accompanied by a somewhat neutral Marriner (Philips).

Rostropovich/Karajan/DG is equal with it, IMO. I guess it depends on if you want Bruch, Bloch, and Faure or Tchaikovsky as the pairing...

Perenyi/Fischer on Hungaroton is excellent and inexpensive. Not at all sluggish.

For the quartet, anything on Supraphon is a good bet (e.g. Smetana Qt, Panocha Qt).
