One of my favorite piano pieces are the lengthy Variations on a Theme of Handel, by Johannes Brahms. I know it's not a favorite with many pianists (or listeners). Currently own two versions:

Oppitz (BMG) - sportsmanlike, a little rough Rogé (Decca) - Impressionist(ic), too soft

Are there any 'milestone' recordings in this piece? (no mono recs)

I fondly remember the recording by Agustin Anievas.

I don't think it is; however, his re-recording on EMI may still be available (unfortunately coupled to the cello sonatas, rendered all but unlistenable by Harrell). If I'm lucky Mustonen will be allowed to record the Handel Vars.; his live performance in Carnegie Hall a couple of years ago was revelatory in its wit and imagination. Of the stereo studio recordings I've heard, my favorite is probably Gelber/Denon. Cohen's seems a bit restrained compared with the live performance I heard a season or two ago.

<< Solomon, on the Philips Great Pianist series! (as mono as it gets, though)

I'll second that.

I have a Philips Duo with the Handel Variations, 442 591-2. Not sure if its still available, however.

I'm reasonably sure no one will suggest this one: Emmanuel Ax on Sony. I'm not even a big fan of his other Brahms, but he really hit a home run when he sat down at the piano to record this. It's an absolute stunner.

Seconded on both counts. I do think Gelber EMI is on a par with his Denon.

I'll second Alain's recommendation, but then I like a lot of Ax recordings (e.g his Schumann Humoresque). Actually, neither the Handel Vars. nor the Humoresque is among my favorite piano works, but Ax's recordings present these works in the best possible light.

It's OK, but have you heard Gelber?

'Matthew B. Tepper wrote

So do I. I had read that it would be issued on CD by Testament, but a search of their on-line catalog showed nothing by Anievas. Does anyone know if it's been released as one of those EMI Fortes? I've gone through a couple of LPs of this recording and have not heard one better.
