I'm sure there has been discussion in this group before on ways of reducing the volume of sound from pianos (eg, in flats). Does anyone know any tricks for brightening the sound of upright pianos (eg, stretching wires across the inside - if that works)where the original sound is too dead for the acoustic?

Hardness and shape of the hammer is the key to brilliance , however , I suspect that you may be interested to know that rails can be made which drop down between the hammers and the strings consisting of leather strips with a metal rivet on the end which produce a 'metalic' , bright sound suitable for honky tonk piano styles.

I think your piano tech could do some adjustments to try and voice the piano, most uprights are pretty bright. You might look inside to see if a pillow had dropped down in there

Thanks for those thoughts. The piano in question has just been moved into a church hall where I play for regular rehearsals and classes, and, alas it does not have a pillow in it!
