Buchbinder and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra released a few CDs of Mozart's piano concertos. The VSO's website states that the CDs are live. Does that mean with applause? Do these CDs have good recorded sound? How is Buchbinder's playing?

I haven't listened to one in a while, but don't remember hearing any applause or any other obvious evidence that an audience was present. The sound is very good - as good as not-quite-first-rate studio recordings. Buchbinder's playing is fairly plain - he gets on with it at slightly quicker than average (for these days) tempi. The most distinctive feature of the orchestral contribution is probably the uncommonly loud/intrusive timpani playing. Not really competetive with the best of what's out there.
