Cant find the maker on my piano? the serial number is 77173, but there is no markings on the soundboard or anywhere to do with the maker? there are two 'D's written on either side of the soundboard and Johnson written on the back in what looks like chalk? any help to find out the maker would be fab

Go to this site www.bluebookofpianos.com/serial1

Click the white envelope at the top of the makers list. You'll be able to email the site, and send some pics to them. They'll do a free search to help you find out the maker.

Difficult to determine without the name on the front. A tech like myself might be able to find the name but this would require dismantling the instrument and looking inside.
I can tell you that MOST of the 5 digit serial numbers were previous to 1936...
