Is there any piano maker uses cedar for the piano soundboard, or any maker attempted to use cedar instead of spruce soundoard?
I don't recall that I've ever heard or seen a cedar sound board on a piano, where cedar is used guitar in some models. Ramirez use cedar in certain guitar models, so are Takamine guitars. Cedar has sharp sound, requires no break in period. Estonia piano use red spruce which resemble cedar.

Who told you this bit of nonsense?
No one uses cedar in a piano soundboard. They tried sassafras once - sort of a musical instrument/room deodorizer all in one type thing...... I don't think it caught on though.........
......... jeez......

I can think of one benefit: moths wouldn't go near the felt in a cedar soundboard piano!

I have heard from people that really know wood that true cedar is not what we think of in 'cedar' chests. For instance, in classical guitars, you can have a spruce or cedar top. The cedar is clearly not of the chest variety.

Hold on a bit, Larry, I seem to recall that Story and Clark used Cedar in their 'Storytone' soundboards back in the fifties. Since it was used in small spinets or consoles, I doubt that it made much difference. As for guitars, cedar is used in guitars meant for blue grass or other fast picking styles. It has a shorter sustain sound than spruce which keeps the sound from going muddy when playing a lot of notes close together. I wonder if it would be good for ragtime? Maybe someone should look up one of those old Story and Clarks and find out.

Nope. They used mahogany.

Damn, I think you're right. There goes that CRS again. I wonder what the reasons were for the mahogany?? It's used in some guitars too, but generally cheap ones.

For any of you interested, there is a good news article that came out yesterday about the wood used in a Stradivarius. There are now theories that a 'mini-Ice-Age' might have produced the unusual wood. Here it is: http://www.msnbc.com/news/1002745.asp?0dm=W15NT&cp1=1
