I know this piece was written for a High School orchestra but nonetheless it is a very good piece of Music. I played it in High School and last year. It has quite enjoyable horn parts but it is a chore for the first trumpet who gets to earn his money. Every time I look in the bins at Tower I never see a recording. Anyone know of a good one. Perhaps Copland himself.

If I did not have the mouthpiece pressed to my face I would not be able to resist signing along with the BIG TUNE. Not as catchy as Jupiter but very nice

says...

It is a lovely piece. Copland's recording is good. Another good one, in gorgeous sound, is the one on Reference, IIRC by Keith Clark and the Pacific SO.

There's an excellent one by the Seattle Symphony with Gerard Schwartz on either Delos or Denon, can't remember which. It also contains James Earl Jones' incomparable rendering of the 'Lincoln Portrait'.

And another one with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops on Telarc.

I also love this piece. I rather like my own Cleveland Pops - Louis Lane version, though I cannot remember the label - no, it IS Sony, as it USED to be Columbia. I think the Pops lends just the right lightness & brisk joy to it, though there may be an even better version out there.

The only one I've got is the NYPO Bernstein Live box, which has so many other treasures in it that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Fiedler and the Pops on a DG LP ('Fiedler's Favorite Overtures' were ideal in this piece. Never commercially reissued on CD to my knowledge. I did my own restoration of this collection along with Fiedler's Bernstein Orchestral Music from 'Mass.' The 2 original LPs were of such short playing time that they both fit on one CD.

Copland Outdoor Overture Goldmark Im Fruhling Sullivan Overture di Ballo Bernstein Candide Overture + Music from Mass

If you would like to write to me regarding this or other reissues, change the 'm' in 'moppenheim' to 'r.'

You left out the Festive Overture by Shostakovich. That's the real treasure of that LP.

Sorry, I was just pulling the titles out of memory. The Festive Overture is indeed on the CD I did.
