I'm rather fond of the optional cornet in the waltz of the Symphonie fantastique, but of the recordings I have, I think only Martinon plays it, and that's coupled with the execrable Lelio. Who else includes it?

I also love that cornet part. Davis's critic-praised second reading (I think it's his second) from the 70s with the Concertgebow includes it. I also think the earlier Davis recording with the LSO includes it but I'm not 100% sure. I own a Lombard/Strasbourg recording on Erato that also uses the cornet.

Mehta also included the cornet part in his early NYPhil experiment in digital recording.

Abbado/Chicago SO on DGG.

Good luck finding it, though! I doubt very much this one is on the top of anyone's recommendation lists (not mine), but only the most prejudiced and confirmed Abbado-hater should write it off. There are a lot of things about it I quite like (among them the use of cornet).

I love the cornet part too.....it sounds woong without it.

As others said, the Davis 1975 one has it. The Gardiner has it too (interesting sound, as I imagine it's a keyed cornet rather than a valve one).

But not, presumably, the recorded sound. This was the first SF I bought on CD and was irritated by the swimmy acoustic, as though fake reverberation had been added (his Chicago Mahler 7 is similar). Maybe remastering would improve it.

I admit I'm not wild about it, but it seems this disturbed you more than it does me.

Yes, only I think the CSO Mahler 7 is worse.

Oh, probably, but will it ever happen?

Why do you believe that multi-miking is Abbado's choice? Anyway, that wouldn't explain the fake (or whatever it is) resonance, would it? Or is it something the engineers add afterwards to compensate for the forest of microphones? I've long since culled that M7 too - the sound is so bad it hides important details at times.

Davis's LSO recording has it.

What is your evidence for that assertion? If it's true, it's very inconsistent, since many of Abbado's recordings are very well engineered and not at all 'spotlit'.
