Hi,

I've been playing for about 8 months now, and am trying to figure out what the correct height should be for my piano relative to my bench at my height (6'0'.

I think my keyboard is too high, when I sit at my bench with my hands and fingers relaxed on the keys, my wrists are a bit (1/2 = 1' higher than my elbows. Is this right?

Can anyone give me the scoop on this?

Thanks!

Bryan, it sounds as though your bench is too low. However, before you figure out how to deal with that, make sure that your sitting posture is correct. Your torso should be absolutely upright and leaning slightly forward, as though you were ready to stand up from the bench without 'lurching' forward. If your elbows are still lower than your wrists in that position, then I would suggest that you put a book or flat pillow on the bench to make it the right height. Ideally your elbows should be very slightly higher than the wrists, not vice-versa. However, there have been pianists who have made great careers who sat exceedingly low, so it's not a one-size-fits-all proposition. The position I described is the one that seems to work the best for the vast majority of players.
