It does matter, very much, what you sit on if you're serious about piano playing and improving your technique.

Look for an adjustable bench, also called an artist bench. They can cost as much as $1000 but you can find them online for about $100. It will be perfectly good - rock solid and adjustable.

You will be pleasantly surprised what sitting at the correct height (for you) can feel like at your piano.

Adjustable height on a bench is important so that you can sit with your forearms parallel (roughly) with the floor, elbows a little higher than your wrists.

Wow. Thanks so much for that answer. I went to a music shop after reading your answer to try it out for myself, and you are right. I cannot afford to dish $1000 out for this, but am sure I will find something online, for less.
