I'm not a fan of the Frequenz Europa Musica label, but a few of their pirated broadcasts deserve mention. Specifically, the Abbado/VPO Mahler 2nd (Stefania Woytowicz/ soprano Lucretia West , contralto) from the Salzburg Festival : August 14, 1965. The VPO strings really dig into the first movement. Some of the orchestral 'attacks', and there are plenty in this symphony, are heart-stopping. Throughout the entire performance the VPO demonstrates a commitment to Mahler, that I did not think they had until LB arrived. As broadcasts go, the sound is sometimes harsh, but acceptable. It would be interesting to hear more VPO Mahler from the early and mid 60's. (Like the Krips/VPO Mahler 2??)

Don't forget their stunning playing for Mehta in Mahler 2 (recorded around 1975, I believe). Is this pre-Bernstein?

No it isn't. The Unitel DVD of Mahler's 9th with LB and the VPO is from March 1971. There may be other LB/VPO Mahler from the late 60's...but I'm not sure.

Bernstein's first (recorded) Mahler with the VPO was the King/Fischer-Dieskau Das Lied, in 1966. But the VPO had a long Mahler tradition, albeit one interrupted between 1938 and 1945.

A quick scan of Vincent Mouret's wonderful discography (http://mapage.noos.fr/vincent/us.html) shows 16 Mahler symphonies recorded (live or studio) by the VPO or the VSOO before 1966, including nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, and Das Lied, under Abbado, Klemperer, Kletzki, Kubelik, Mitropoulos, Scherchen, and Walter.

The Vienna Symphony did even more Mahler recording than the Philharmonic during the 1950s.

Tony needs to come up with a better alias than that.
