I've owned an Ellington upright piano since the 70's, serial number 45919. I'm guessing it was built around 1915 or so. It has a beautiful quartered oak (refinished) cabinet, and has a bit of sentimental value to us. It needs some action work as a few keys have failed, and the internal leather straps have deteriorated.

Can you advise what would be an appropriate amount to spend on such an instrument?

Hey there fiftyohm,

Other than the sentimental value, pianos do have an expiry date and their parts wear out. Having a technician look at it for you is your best way forward. Restoring a piano can be prohibitively expensive and can far out weigh the actual value of the instrument.
