Escaping The Block

What do you do when you are experiencing a creative block while either writing or playing?
I sit in front of the computer and stare at the screen, waiting for it to give me something, anything.
Nada.

Sometimes it is just not there. I can go surfing on the Internet looking for material of interest, or reread old pieces and still nothing will happen.
(Same happens if I want to play or paint or even find my keys :-))

I find that the only thing to get me out of a block, is to get up and do something completely different.
Weed the garden, make dinner, wash the floors. Edward Wiess from Piano Musings says Just walk away, You cant force music.
I think it is a little more than that. If I walk away, and go and read a book for example, or do something else that demands a certain type of thinking power - it doesn’t help.
But if I walk away, and do some menial task, that requires a repetitive body movement and involves other senses, like weeding, for example - and the smell of freshly turned earth, or washing the floors - smelling the detergent and feeling the satisfaction of a job well done… those are the types of things that will and do loosen my creative process. I suppose that it could be compared to pressing the restart button on the computer.
What works for you? How do you get out of creative blocks?
