After working on Fledermaus Waltz for hours on end, and struggling through the chord changes, waltz time, and the speed of the piece itself, I took a break for a few minutes, and when I went back to the piano, my hands were flying over the keys. My left hand was playing the chords without me giving it a second thought, and it's like the whole song was driving itself along the keys.

I'm hoping that each new piece won't continue to take weeks to learn, but right now, I'm feeling very gratified that all of my hard work is finally beginning to pay off.

Sometimes I take a piece as far as I can for a few weeks then give it a break for a week. The problems some how become smaller after returning to the piece after that 'break time'.

Well, that's sort of what I did, Scott. I last worked on it two weeks ago, and in the interim, got sidetracked by other, more interesting pieces that I dabbled with. Now I'm back to it again, and all of the parts that I practiced slowly and carefully are the parts that flow the smoothest now.

Just to reassure you: it will. As your skills to learn and play improve it will of course become easier to learn and play the pieces you are studying today. OTOH you will find harder music scores more challenging, so the study part will stay about as tough as it is today - but increasingly rewarding!

have fun,

Thanks, Reinder. Actually, this is what I suspected. But the work itself is fun (if not frustrating) and the breakthroughs are always such a pleasant and welcome surprise.
