Hello! Could you give me an advice about Kalinnikov's 1st Symphony? I love it, and I'm considering Kuchar (Naxos). But which is the best? Jarvi (Chandos)? Svetlanov (Chant du Monde)? Thanks, Mr Duffy

I guess I'd give Jarvi the slight edge over Kuchar, but the Kuchar is a very solid performance that will give pleasure.

What about Dudakova (which I haven't heard)?

Toscanini. I played this piece. It is a real neglected masterpiece.

It's not good. Jarvi is my favorite for the 1st, though I like Abendroth as well.

Has the Kondrashin recording of the Kalinnikov 1st ever appeared on CD? I still have the Melodiya Angel LP. I haven't heard all of the other recordings mentioned, but I imprinted on the Kondrashin, so I would love to get a CD of it.

None of these come close to Golovanov (dramatic) nor Toscanini (exciting), but these recordings are both from the 1940s and maybe hard to find.

Golovanov has been available recently on Boeme. I like it, but would want to supplement it with Kondrashin should that become available. I would give Svetlanov a small edge over Jarvi. Jarvi is fine until you hear how exciting others can be in this music. I don't consider Chandos engineering to be a big plus, either (unless you're comparing to the Golovanov or the Abendroth).

Well, it is when led by Toscanini, anyway.

Don't be greedy. I'd be satisfied with the LP. I lost an E-bay auction the other day for the Ivanov on LP. Grrr.
