I have an upright Gerhard Heintzman Piano and I am curious to find out what year it was made. Does anyone know where on the piano I might find this information?

There should be a serial # on the iron frame. Lift the lid and it's inside on the right corner. Piano rebuilders have a book which has the info you need

cheers

Is such information not avaliable to the public? I to just inherited a Gerhard Heintzman Cabinet Grand Scale piano. My serial number is 25062. I would be very interested in learning when this piano was built.

Cheers!

Any luck Dan? We've just received a Gerhard Heintzman as well with a serial number of 9457. We were told by a piano tech who came to tune it that based on the serial number it was made between 1900 - 1905, but that was just from his head, and so I am looking for confirmation online.

thanks,
Ardbeg

Hi ~! I have one also - open the top completely ...if it is a tall upright - 55" tall about .....
there is a serial number ....
then you can go to a site to find the age of pianos -
or look for a piano supply store on line - they will have a book that has a list of Alot of pianos with the serial numbers and dates of the make year -
Some piano tuners have this book -
actually - my tuner has this book -
if you want to call him -
301 879-1978 c.
Clyd Allen is the tuner - he is good and does repairs too

Good luck !
you will find my site and music below

Thank you for the post Musical Mama, but I believe that link is actually for a different company, started by Gerhard Heintzman's uncle. In the 1860's, Theodore August Heintzman created the company "Heintzman & Co. Ltd" in Toronto and his pianos are considered the best quality piano ever made in Canada. Gerhard Heintzman was his nephew and later created his own company, also in Toronto. His pianos were considered second only to his uncle's in quality (so I am told). Eventually, (I think in the 1920s) Gerhard Heintzman's company was purchased by Heintzman & Co. However, the serial number chart in that link appears to apply only to the piano's made under the Heintzman & Co. line. I am finding it very difficult to find info on the Gerhard Heintzman pianos, even though they seem to be in abundance. If anyone finds some info online, please post a link.

thanks,
Ardbeg

Hi, here is the website with the date of your piano.
http://www.mbi-communications.com/Piano_Numbers.htm

I found mine. Mine is 1903, and from the serial number you left on my topic feed so is yours. Have a look anyways.

Thank you so much Broccoli! I guess our piano tech knows his stuff - he had estimated it to be between 1900 and 1905.

Thanks again for the persistent detective work!

I have a Heintzman & Co upright dated on metal plate as March 10, 1889. I can't find serial number. I looked for serial number in places suggested. Anyone have any info about my piano? Any idea of value? It seems to be in good condition. It has the Heintzman & Co. logo on the front above the keys and on the steel plate that holds the strings...

Any advice would be appreciated!

Our piano tech told us that our upright was built around the late 1890's or 1900's. It was called the "queens" piano as queen Victoria played on an upright grand.

A lot of times the serial number isn't in a very easy to read writing, but more like an afterthought and in either hand writing, or some sort of stencil. I mentioned a website up higher in this thread, so if you scroll up you'll find the link and it will take you to a list of canadian piano manufacturers and their serial numbers with corresponding dates.

As for the name of the types of pianos the name of them should be on the soundboard along with the date os patent and registration. (Which is where most serial numbers are also found.)

I hope this helps.

I've owned a Gerhard Heinzman upright baby grand for a number of years and it still produces great sound. To add to the discussion... my piano's serial number is #3513... The foot pedals are dated "8 Nov 87" The dates are stamped right into the metal. you can find the date inside the piano whre the pedals are attached to the wood bars... one piano tech that tuned it said this one (according to his book of pianos)is the oldest example of a Gerhard Heinzman still in playing condition... I haven't pursued this comment further... that was 20 years ago... It would be interesting to find out if there are any others of this vintage still playable.

That's sweet. I adore playing my old gal as the history is amazing. How many hands have graced her keys, how many kids had their knuckles smacked with a ruler, or a pencil to the top of their head for missing a note. How many small kids discovered music for the first time, and developed a love in them that continues throughout their entire life. How many people were born and died in the lifespan of it. I love thinking about the former players it might have had. There is something romantic about them.

Mine is from 1903, so not a match for your query, but I thought I'd thank you for posting. I hope you get feedback as I'd love to know myself if there are others with such grand history in their homes.

I also have a Gerhard Heintzman player piano that I inherited a few years back along with several music scrolls. Does anyone know how I can ascertain its true value?

The only way to determine value for sale is by having it visually appraised by a certified appraiser. you can have something with a huge name, but it can be completely worthless if the condition is less than poor.

Have someone look at it, if you want to sell it and it needs a little work but it'll send the asking price up, do it.

If it's just for your own knowledge, getting an appraisal can be costly depending on where you live.

Best wishes.
