I just got back from seeing it and I thought it was about two hours too long (each scene was dragged out about twice as long as was needed). There wasn't any 'plot' except for the Civil War -which is great if you're a Civil War buff but not if you were interested in seeing a movie with real multi-dimensional characters. The only thing that ultimately held it together for me was Stephen Lang's portrayal of Stonewall Jackson whom the film is really centered on and is seen throughout much of the movie. His performance was arresting in spite of the 'history book' like dialogue.

Watch 'Glory' instead. Or Ken Burns' civil war mini series.

Ted Turner just wants to replay the Civil War over and over and over and over and over and over until the South wins, or at least gains a moral victory. Maybe he should just produce a film based on Harry Turtledove's _The Guns of the South_, and be done with it already!

I think that any movie that stars Jeff Daniels is doomed from the start.

The saddest thing about all this is that this movie and Shaara's inept novel are being assigned to high school students in my area as homework in history. The notion that students can only find interest in America's history via popcorn culture can only lead to the further dumbification of an already barely literate electorate.

You wouldn't think this from the evidence of 'Gettysburg' which portrays Lee as a idiot and the Union guys as real heroes.

Turner only had a cameo in that one. He executive produced this one.

well...Lee wasn't good here on the third day...sending Pickett and gang across 1 mile open field against fixed defenses....and then some 50 years later, the same stupidity seen in France by both sides. Longstreet was right...move between Gettysburg and Washington..'redeploy' after the first day of Gettysburg...and wait for Meade.
