I've always felt this opus number is generally ignored among Haydn's quartets. Is this true, or am I just of a suspicious nature?

I wouldn't ignore these works, if I were you, i.m.o. there are two masterpieces in this series: no. 1,especially the variation movement and no 4. See if you can get hold of a (deleted) recording of the Tokyo Qt, still 100% Japanese at the time.

of mine. In particular, I love #1 and #5 (but each quartet has its own particular strengths, its own particular originality). I am pleased with the Angeles Quartet performances of this set. Better than the estimable Tokyo, I would say.

So, they're not known by the masses, but then a very high percentage of Haydn's output is not known.

Ah, the good old days of classical stations. Even in the eighties, when deterioration was beginning to show, Minnesota Public Radio broadcast the Tátrai cycle, complete, over many weeks. They played them at 9 in the morning. Hearing Haydn and knowing that anyone could tune in brightened my day. I may have been fooling myself. I bet a lot of listeners changed the station.

Best regards,
