Hi,

I am trying to learn and simultaneously memorize the 2nd movement of Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata. I have read that one important part of memorization is to analyze the piece. I think this will work well for this piece because once I learn the chords of the Theme, they repeat for all of the Variations.

But I have run into a snag in that I cannot identify the second chord of the 6th measure. The key is Db Major, and the chord is (from the bass) Bbb-E(nat)-G(nat)-Db. What is the correct roman numeral for this? It resolves to Ab-Eb-Gb-Db (which I think is V7 with a suspended fourth) then Ab-Eb-Gb-C (V7).

Are there any links on the internet that would help me learn to analyze pieces like this? I took two semester of Harmony and Counterpoint in college (covered mostly Harmony and little Counterpoint!) so I understand the concepts

Donald Francis Tovey edited an edition of the complete Beethoven Sonatas, which gives the player excellent performance notes. But he also wrote 'A Companion to Beethoven Sonatas' which goes through all the Sonatas and gives the musical analysis as to form, etc.
