My wife says that I should give my piano teacher a Christmas tip. She read that it's done all the time, but I've never tipped a music teacher in my life and never heard that anybody else did.

Do any of you kind folks out there tip your piano teacher? How much?

I agree with you, but the question was about a 'piano teacher' (educator) not 'piano player' (entertainer)

I received a $200 tip from one of my students this past week. Along with that he enclosed a note that said ' thank you for your patience'.

Last year he gave me $100 at holiday time. I told him I wouldn't accept any less than $300 next year.

And you only tip the barber if he is *not* the owner of the barbershop.

You're right, but I was responding to the the statement 'Don't use the word tips, it's insulting.'

That's not true at any barber shop I am familiar with.

That's an old, established rule, Gerry. You don't tip a proprietor. He makes the profit; a tip doesn't even make any sense. That's like a bartender having 'tip out' to his boss. You might as well tip Macy's when you buy a shirt.

I know this is true in theory, but my barber ( a woman from Thailand) charges so little ($5/haircut) and does such a good job, that even if I tip her $2, I save $5 over any other haircut I could get in my town, so I do it anyway. Yes, she owns her own shop.... Her secret is that she can work so fast. She can do my hair in about 7 minutes, and I still have lots to work with.
