Fun idea; I'm not sure about the practicality

Rec.music.makers.guitar.jazz has assembled soundclips of the participants twice, with very good results. But they get a larger readership.

To each his own, but I've always felt competitions forward the foolish idea that being better than others is important, let alone promote the falsehood that it might be true, when, in fact, it is subjective.

I'm not saying one shouldn't have, as a personal goal, being as good as one can be, and my point is that this is not the same thing and focusing on being better than others, which is not that important, in my view.

But, if some think it would be fun, I'm not against that, either, as long as participants don't take it seriously.

Competition has the residual effect of promoting and encouraging excellence beyond whatever the current norm happens to be. Which pushes the envelope and improves the art, I suppose. I don't like the 'thrill of victory, agony of defeat' mindset nor the winners/losers syndrome, but I don't know how you can eliminate it, human nature being, well, human nature.
