I'm sorry to hear that. I was delighted to find the transcription because I had been listening to that recording for many years. Although some of the runs can be a bit fiddly, I don't consider that it's as hard as, say, some of the Chopin Etudes.
I spent a while trying to find the fingering that worked best for me, and then practised it like any other technically challenging piece. Once I had the notes under my belt, I found I could relax into the feel of it more. I keep the piece in my repertoire but I do need to work on it from time to time to keep it up to scratch. (I'm still hoping that one day, in some gig somewhere, someone is going to ask, 'Hey, can you play 'Sweet Lorraine' in the style of Art Tatum?'
I don't generally favour learning jazz pieces note-for-note, but in Art's case I'll make an exception! Exploring his arrangements is like having a master-class in harmony and improvisation.
Having said all that, I admit that it probably is too ambitious for Grade 8 level. But then, it depends on the individual pianist and their technique.
Anyway, sorry if I hit a sore spot. I hope you have more success with Tatum in the future. I'm a newcomer to this ng, and I'm really pleased I found someone else who has played Art's solos.
Best wishes,
