I was listening capiviated last night to Jochum pulling around Syms No 1 & 2, it was blissful. I felt guilty - this wasn't what Beethoven wrote - but it was lovely from top to bottom.

Beautiful recording too - so good it didn't need the OIBP treatment according to the box. I imagine the mono symphonies will require a bit more tolerance. I look forward to them nonetheless.

Once again these recordings IMHO show EJ to be master of the symphonic transition.

I can't wait to hear the rest.

A perfect example of a great conductor making the music sound better than it really is.... >>

I thought I'd never live to hear this said about Beethoven. Even his first two symphonies amaze me...is there really that little regard for his early

You mean that cube-shaped planet populated with imperfect, non-living replicas of Superman, Lois Lane, and the rest?

When do we get Jochum's Concertgebouw Beethoven cycle he recorded for Philips? The LP of the 7th from that set was the first recording I bought with my own money 30 years ago. It certainly wasn't the last record I bought either, I can tell you that.

I don't know about the others, but the 'Eroica' was reissued on Philips 426 066.

We *did* get it (a series of budget priced CDs), though maybe it's now out of print.

<< I am not sure. In this country (USA) DG has issued (January release) a boxed set of the Beethoven 9 symphonies conducted by Jochum, Is this the same recording you all have been talking about? I did a quick check and did not see any listing of the orchestra. IF it is MDT does have it. >>

That is the cycle with Berlin and the Bavarian Radio. Ken Meltzer

I bought the individual cds many years ago from MDC Music in London. I'm not sure if the're still available.
