I'm a guitar player who is finally trying to learn how to play the piano the 'correct' way. I've messed around playing chords on the piano for several years, but I never really knew what to play with the left hand. I'm basically interested in accompanying myself while I sing alhough I'd someday like to progress into playing melody with the right hand. Currently, I'm generally just playing the root - fifth (sometimes I throw in a 3rd)with the left hand while I play chords with the right. Is this an acceptable technique? I'm also unsure of the left hand fingering. I usually place my left hand fingers in the root position of the chord and play some combination of root-3rd-5th. Any help would be appreciated and I'd also appreciate any book recommendations. I'm not looking to become an expert, but I'd just enjoy being able to play some pop and standard tunes.

I'd say, try to make your left hand as good as your right from the beginning. Try to develop your left hand alone and then try accompanying with your right. Just pay attention to your bass line, your left hand as much or even more than your right hand, I think it's worht the work. Otherwise, in time your left hand is going to be a 'slave' of your right, while it could play an equal role in your music.
