Hello,

I am looking for some sheet music of Gottschalk works which I have found on CD, notably

Danza Souvenir d'Andalousie Murmures eoliens La Chute des Feuilles

I have checked the sheet music stores on the internet but cannot find these works except for the first two which are found in the Dover compilation - which I displaced with my recent move. There seemed to be lots of errors in the Dover Edition with lots of accidentals missing, is this true or is it my hearing? Anyone has an idea where I can find the music for these works? Any pointers will be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jentje Goslinga

Sounds to me like Gottschalk might be modern and you are maybe getting put off by his dissonances not mistakes in the scores. TS

Schirmer actually has a nice Gottschalk anthology. Gottschalk Collected Works for Piano, vol 2024 It has Danza from your list and 21 other pieces.

I can't speak to the error rate, but the typesetting is much much better than the typical old Schirmer editions.

Gottschalk was a wonderful composer, not at all modern/dissonant. He was an American Louisianan living in the mid early to mid 1800s. Studied piano in Paris. His music has American, Cajun, African and European influences. Some even anticipates ragtime and jazz a bit. If you had to classify him, I suppose he would be counted as part of the Romantic Era.

Listen to his music if you get the chance. You'll be glad you did. Some favorites are Souvenir do Porto Rico, Pasquinade, and The Banjo

Yes, I also found that out via the net, strange that Andalousie is not in this anthology but it is a bit above my level anyway. That still leaves the other pieces. They have been recorded which suggests that they must be available in print somewhere.

I trust that'll be fine. I have the Schirmer Scarlatti and it has almost no errors. I feel the errors in the Dover edition are errors and not intentional dissonants.

I agree that Gottschalk is a very fine composer.

Let me weigh in (yet again) with http://www.cdsheetmusic.com/amerconctoc.html. The piano disc American Concert Music contains a wealth of Gottschalk, along with a wealth of other American composers (you'll have to scroll down, I'm afraid). Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, this disc is offered only within the U.S.A. and I believe you're posting from Canada (?).

I took a brief tour of the Net, but found no listing of the Murmures or La Chute as in print. The first two seem to pop up in just about everyone's collections, including our own 'Piano Music by L.M. Gottschalk' (410-41072, US $9.95). Sorry.

Yes, I am in British Columbia, Canada. Thanks for the lead; I was unaware of your site and there is music on your site (Scarlatti and Haydn) which I would like to purchase. Being able to print out the music on my laser printer will solve my biggest problem with sheet music which is preventing the book from inadvertently closing on me while I am playing.

Thanks for your effort,
