I've just gotten word that Lou Harrison has just died. Here is the email I received:

He was in Indianapolis on his way to Ohio for a festival of his music. He had been met in Chicago by some Ohio State students who were driving him to the festival. He collapsed as he got up to go to the restroom. As of the e-mail sent out last night, the cause of his death was not yet known.

A particularly fetching work by Harrison that I have and treasure is his incidental music to Yeats's The Only Jealousy, which was recorded at the legendary Black Mountain College where (in addition to Harrison) composer Stefan Wolpe and poets Robert Duncan and Charles Olson once taught. It was only listed in the spoken word section of Schwann and I only accidentally stumbled upon it while browsing at NYC's Record Hunter store during the late 1960s while I was attending the 1967 World Science Fiction Convention. Enchanting, incantatory musical wizardry of the highest order.

I meant to say The Only Jealousy of Emer, not simply The Only Jealousy. How impatient one's typing fingers get sometimes...
