I really like his piano concerto (Zimerman/Lutoslawski BBC Symphony). So I wanted to get recs on recordings of his symphonies.

Go with the Naxos series, played by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra under Antoni Wit. Very decent performances recorded in clear, slightly arid sound. Plus you get all kinds of interesting fillers on the cheap.

For the Third Symphony, Lutoslawski's most powerful work, you might want to try Daniel Barenboim's version on EastWest, or Esa-Pekka Salonen's with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Both are splendid, marvelously played.

With all due respect: Because the playing and the sonics of both the Naxos and the other discs mentioned are superior to Lutoslawski's own recordings.
