A recent posting about Mackerras made me want to try some of his Dvorak. Any comments on the following:

Slavonic Dances - a recent recording on Supraphon.

Violin Concerto and Romance - with Pamela Frank on Decca.

2 CD set on Classics for Pleasure with Sym 7,8,9 - London Philharmonic Orchestra Romance for Violin - with Stephanie Gonley and English Chamber Orchestra Symphonic Variations for Orchestra - with London Philharmonic Orchestra

Wind & String Serenades on Classics for Pleasure - English Chamber Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra Winds (I asked about serenade recommendations in another thread.)

Any other recordings I might consider.

says...

Fantastic disc, with perhaps the best sound even given the CzPO, at least on the Supraphon label.

By best recommendations for Mackerras tend to be conducted by Ancerl or Kubelik. The Korean I mentioned somewhere else is also good in this music.

I'm afraid I don't know that many of his recordings but Sir Charles has a deep understanding of Czech music (deeper, sometimes, than some of the domestic conductors) and I would have thought that all of them would certainly be worth listening to.

It will, in any event, be an enjoyable voyage of discovery! He has an 'ear' for real rubato which is rather important in works by Dvorak.

Kind regards, Alan M. Watkins

Is this supposed to be ironic or was it a typo?

I haven't heard any of those, but I can recommend the disc with the Symphonic Variations, the Scherzo Capriccioso, and the Legends.
