I have a friend, she is looking for a new piano for her young son. The piano teacher suggest a piano which has a German brand (that is what I understand) but made in China called Mendelssohn. The teacher said that Mendelssohn had a beautiful sound.

I know Europeans make the best pianos in the world but I have never heard about this brand. I like to have opinions and suggestions from this group before I call my friend back. As I know, my friend's budget is about $5000(52' Mendelssohn is about $4000).

Thanks a lot.

In that price range, you can do better than a Chinese piano. Having spent a considerable amount of time shopping for pianos in the past few weeks, I might suggest a used but recent vintage Petrof or Charles Walter. They might also look for a better model used Yamaha or Kawai upright in this price range.

If they want a new piano, a Yamaha or Kawai might fit the bill. I also played a new Baldwin Hamilton that was a pretty decent piano for about the same price as the Chinese Mendelssohn, and there might be other Baldwin models in the price range.

Finally, piano teachers are great for teaching music theory and technique, but they often have little or no knowledge of the piano market. I would not place much emphasis on the teacher's advice when piano shopping. - - /****************************************************** **************** * Gary M. Well, now, that's an interesting statement. Perhaps 'among the best pianos . .' would be a more reasonable assertion.

Well, I wouldn't agree with that statement, but I think everyone would agree that the Chinese make the worst pianos in the world.
