Dear friends,
After numerous tries, I have never managed to own the complete (OK, without the 3rd which has the 1st mov. missing (I have the TAHRA transfer of this one) Beethoven cycle of Mengelberg 'officially' on Philips LP and CD (Dutch Masters, oop) or M&A (oop AFAIK).
From the above cycle, it happens that I have only the CD with Beethoven Symphonies 1 & 2 issued in Japan more that 10-12 years ago (416 200-2) and the sound is miraculous (far better than the studio Telefunken semi-cycle on PEARL).
***So, could you please tell me if the remaining japanese releases of this cycle sound so great and if this is the case also for the Philips, M&A or other releases. Finally any ideas on where I can get any of the above from??***
Many thanks

In addition to this disc I also have Philips live Schubert 8&9, in sound almost as spectacular (for the period) as the Beethoven. Aside from LvB cycle, Philips Japan edition also featured live Brahms 1st, Franck Sym., Mahler 4th - all in fantastic sound, more vivid and 'present' than most studio recordings of the period (or even a decade later).

Yes, they do, but I think they're long out of print. However, Hubert Wendel's transfers are even better - the basic sound of the recording itself isn't terribly different, but he's done a superb job of getting rid of the surface noise that infects the Japanese transfers. (Likewise the Schubert 8/9 on the same label.) In every instance where I've been able to make the comparison, Wendel's transfers easily win.
