In a couple of recent threads, Moiseiwitsch was mentioned. While I've seen his recordings from time to time, I cannot recall ever hearing one. Not one. (Well...I think I actually acquired an LP a while back, but still haven't cleaned and reviewed it. The curse of vinyl backlog.) From the praise he gets in various quarters, it's becoming apparent that I need to remedy my ignorance. So please...what are the essential recordings that will turn a 'newbie' into a fan?

Thanks in advance,

I would first get his disc on Naxos(volume II) with short pieces for piano solo, including Beethoven's Andante Favori, Hummel's Rondo, Weber/ Tausig's Invitation to the Dance, Mendelssohn's Scherzo, and the Wagner/ Liszt Tannhauser overture, among others. To me, this disc best illustrates Moiseiwtisch's strong points, his tremendous sense of colour and his sense of humour.

Moiseiwitsch was a stupendous pianist. I had the pleasure of hearing him around 1961 play Beethoven's emporer concerto. Even with the rancid sound and echo(s) of Lewisohn Stadium in NYC, the elegance, clarity and sheer beauty of his performance came through.

I own many of his CDs, but the one I've been most taken with lately is issued by Naxos and included Schuman's scenes from childhood and the most musical performance I've ever heard of Pictures at an Exhibition. For $6 or $7 you just can't go wrong.
