Okay I know Mozart didn't write nocturnes, that was more typical of Chopin and others. What I want to know is, did Mozart write any piano music that resembles nocturnes, for example, depressing, slow, quiet, relaxing, etc? Most of Mozart's music is that of someone with naturally high levels of caffeine in his brain. I like that, don't get me wrong, but I was wondering if he ever wrote nocturnal music. And to keep my post relevant to this newsgroup, give me a recommended CD or two.

There are six Notturni by Mozart, scored for two sopranos and bass accompanied by three basset horns. Gentle, reflective pieces that sound like out-takes from Cosi. Elly Ameling and members of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble recorded them for the Philips complete ed.

Of his solo piano music I would nominate the a minor Rondo as closest to Chopin's Nocturnes...but not that much. Some of the slow movements of the piano concertos come closer in mood.

Re Chopin and Nocturnes, let's not forget John Field.

******************** Although not keyboard, the Masonic Funeral Music may be in the spirit of which you seek. Walter on CBS along with several well played overtures from the operas. I don't know if Sony released it on CD, but they should if they haven't.

Very little of the PME was specifically recorded for it, and much is ADD.

Apparently Walter's recording is on a CD with his Haydn sym. 96, overtures (same ones, if not nec. the same recordings, as in the Odyssey (and other?) LP incarnations,) three German Dances and two Minuets (see http://www.sonyclassical.com/releases/64486/tracks.htm )? Eric Schissel
