How many versions of this are available. There seem to be two on DGG (one mono from the 50s and one stereo from the 60s) and also one on Erato. Is the Erato one a live recording like the Mravinsky Francesca da Rimini on the same label and the Shostakovitch 10th? Or is it a studio recording. If so, does the Erato recording rival the DGG ones or is it inferior?

The Erato is a 'live' recording. The sound is excellent. The interpretation is not at all different from the earlier stereo recording on DG, though that earlier recording is, I believe, only available as part of a set of 4, 5 and 6. IMHO both stereo recording are excellent if you like Mravinsky's way with Tchaikovsky.

For a limited time only, there is also the legendary 1949 Mravinsky Pathetique, issued by BMG as Volume 19 of its Mravinsky Edition, available from a distinguished member of the NG on Ebay:

Mravinsky's way with Mravinsky Pathetique, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& category=1051&item=2 507026475&rd=1

This disc is also valuable for excerpts from R-K's Tale of the Invisible City of Kitzezh.
