My idea is a Italianate Bruckner 9, because, IMO, I feel middle movement's melody would fare well under more lyrical hands. Any suggestions?

Abbado got a severe panning if you google search. Guillini is viewed as too Germanic. Muti hasn't done one yet. Sinopoli looks interesting.

Sinopoli is about as 'Italianate' as a Tiger tank.

You should try Giulini anyway. His other recordings are a good indication of how he approaches Bruckner

'Sorach Chanthongkaew'

Any suggestions?

Giulini/CSO on EMI - I don't know if it is 'Italianate' enough, but it's a fine version. i've not heard Abbado's, tho I'd like to...

Seriously, if you are looking for 'lyrical' in the second movement, perhaps you'll respond well to some non-Italians: Bruno Walter (on Sony), Lovro von Matacic (Supraphon), Raphael Kubelik (Orfeo), or Horenstein (BBC). No one is 'lyrical' throughout the movement, but the gentle middle section has a plausible 'singing' feel in these hands. Matacic and Horenstein, in particular, bring out the 'sparkle' in the countermelodies in addition to a sensitive, flexible feel for the melodic line. Walter is a little less colorful and a shade more 'mechanical' in the outer sections, but relatively gentle in other

Dear Sorach & friends:

Do you ask for a more lyrical performed middle movement (The Scherzo) or a more lyrical performed Third movement (The Adagio)?

Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago de Chile (South America)

Note: Please forgive me for my bad English, I am trying to improve it!

Replied Klaus; How about a performance of lyrical/dramatic/structural worth from an Italian ensemble under conductor Sergiu Celebidache? The Fonit Cetra 'Dino Classics' CD 9075042 captures a convincing conception from May 2nd, 1969 with Celebidache leading the RAI Turin Orchestra, who fare rather well under his leadership. Also, the sound isn't bad at all for an RAI concert recording.

For serious Italian, try Giulini/VPO. For a more relaxed Italian, try Vladimir Delman on Ermitage.

Sinopoli's is one of his poorer Bruckner recording, the sound is too dry. For a rich approach I'd recommend Barenboim/Teldec or Giulini/DG.

Try the gorgeously (and often sensuously) played Schuricht/VPO stereo version from early 60s (on EMI). In the first 2 mvts it might fit your criteria.

<< Huzzah! Agreement, agreement. Does anyone know of a current way of getting the EMI CD set of Schuricht leading the Beethoven Symphonies, or are they GWTW? >>

My local Tower was displaying an import copy of this recently. Under $40.
