I'm trying to train my ears to recognize intervals. Ive found the best way to do this is to find a song that helps you recognize them. For instance, the opening of Georgia on My Mind is an ascending Minor 3rd, and the opening verse of What Is This Thing Called Love is a descending Minor 3rd. This will allow me to identify all minor 3rds,

Okay, so based on this method, will someone help me find songs with melodies that are based on:

Dominant 7th intervals Major 7th intervals Minor 6th intervals

I cant find any melodies that use these.

Thanks!!!

It's been a while since I did this in high school, but I remember what we used for two of these.

Theme to 'Star Trek'

I don't remember anyone in the class being able to come up with something for this. I could be wrong though

The 'Love Story' theme begins with a descending minor 6th.

Good ones. I always used Three Blind Mice for a major 3rd, the funeral march theme for a minor 3rd, Love Story (me, too!) for minor 6th (also, The Entertainer) , and My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean for a major 6th. For a major 7th, maybe Bali Ha'i.

Well I guess this is a common way of learning intervals then, must have something to do with the way our brains label and recognize sound.... interesting.

Check a January 2002 thread 'interval training tips' on this same topic:

Indeed. Learning songs comes long before learning intervals, and learning melodies is pretty common. Of course, after a while you just know the intervals directly and you don't need melodies.

I forgot a good one: 'Maria' for tritones (dim. 5th).
