The two I ordered from hmv.com, Grumiaux and Krips, arrived yesterday, and I've immersed myself in the bounty of Mozart contained in both boxes. Good 1950s mono sound, the younger Grumiaux on fire, and Krips more lively in the last three symphonies than in his remakes. Symphony #40, listened to on headphones, sounds something like fake stereo, while 41 is real stereo, as is the Tchaikovsky 5, Haydn 94, and 99 notwithstanding the notes saying the entire set is mono.

These boxes are appealingly compactly packaged, each taking up about 1/2 inch of shelf space. The discs require some coaxing to get out of the paper sleeves, something that will no doubt cause consternation among some of our colleagues.

Is this the end of German manufacturing competence? A friend was just complaining about the same problem with his Jarvi Grieg set. From the dscription they must glue the envelope around the disc to get such a tight fit.
