On the Website of the New York Times (www.nytimes.com) today, in the midst of the articles about the move of the orchestra to Carnegie Hall, there's a link to a 'slideshow' about the orchestra. Some of the photos of NY Phil. conductors and performers over the years are quite striking. If you're interested, it's worth your time to take a look.

Indeed, the photos are very striking and worth seeing. I must add, however, that there are no photos of any artist earlier than Leonard Bernstein, who conducted the opening concert at what began as Phillharmonic Hall. (This was issued on LP and I suspect it's also on CD.)

To be sure, the focus of the article seemed to be Lincoln Center instead of the NYPO. Still, I should have liked to see photos of Mahler, Mengelberg, Toscanini, Walter, Mitropoulos, Stokowski, et al. Maybe even a portrait of Ureli Corelli Hill! Or of Tchaikovsky, who conducted the first concert given at Carnegie Hall... (Sigh

The photos were supplied by the NY Phil archive, and its a form of commercial, or more precisely a Brag Book. Who else could provide a set of recent photos like those?
