One of my favorite recordings, a cassette of the Ockegem Requiem (Clemencic Consort), has just self-destructed. I'd appreciate any recommendations on a CD replacement performance.

The Clerks' Group on ASV. There is much beautiful singing, especially from the basses. Also some nice Brumel, the reason I bought the CD!

There is a wonderful Ockeghem Requiem on Naxos with Musica Ficta. The Missa Prolationum is on the same disc; highly recommended. Go here:

Why? The recording contains all the music Ockeghem has written (Introitus, Kyrie, Graduale, Tractus, Offertorium), plus the polyphonic Sanctus/Communio by Divitis and plainchant. It's by far the best recording I know (that means I prefer it to Hilliard, Clerks' Group, Pro Cantione Antiqua, ANS).

(Well, actually it doesn't contain really all of Ockeghem: the Hostias incipit is sung as plainchant, as on most of the recordings - perhaps Hilliard or the Clerks' Group sings the duo version.)

Todd,

Many thanks for your enlightening and knowledgeable discussion of mediaeval vocal techniques. In the above quote, are you referring to the Harmonia Mundi HMC 901538 release?
