87 percent in UK against the war. Blair shows no signs of listening to the people either. I presume it's 'inappropriate'.

It has never been a favourite pastime of statesmen... What amazes me is that they do not even care about the economy.
But we should trust them, following Sir Colin Budd.
It seems that Bush and Blair expect the Iraqi's to compensate us once Saddam is no longer in power. I read in one of our newspapers that they expect to receive at least 200 billion dollar for their 'humanitarian action'. Didn't Bush sr. receive 40 billion from Kuweit?
The Bushes know how to give a new meaning to 'Marshall-help'.

I sometimes wondered whether Ferlinghetti had turned into a less appallingly bad poet in the years I've been ignoring him. It seems he hasn't.
Regardless, I think it would be a good idea to keep the political stuff down to a dull roar if possible, lest we wind up like every other Usenet group out there. Know what I mean?

Yes, Bush has no idea of the absurdity of what he is attempting to do.

The musical equivalent of a poet laureate is not a mere performer but a composer. How about Ruth Crawford Seeger or Aaron Copland or Elliott Carter? Or at least Leonard Bernstein.

Interesting and disturbing article in the current New York Review on the subject of the demonization of Europe in American politics that is part and parcel of the rhetoric being used to marshal support for the war on Iraq. Don't you Europeans know you're supposed to think like George Bush on every issue?

Orwell would have been horrified by Bush-speak including all of the insane outright lies he peddled in his State of the Union. My favorite whopper is the claim that the Iraquis had spies disguised as scientists to fool the UN inspectors . . . as if the scientists sent by the UN could be fooled for more than three seconds by a non-scientist.
Note, too, that Bush has begun to lay the groundwork for moving on from Iraq to Iran in the same State of the Union.

The Media laid down on 9/11 and have been playing dead ever since . . . except for the Bush cheering section at FOX. They're very much alive.
