Ah yes! As we age our sight slowly goes out the window. So for me a good piano light to help me see notation is essential. A problem occurs when I lift the lid of my Yamaha console to let the sound out. (when closed its analagous to listening through a closed door in my opinion). When it is opened the lid sits at a 30 degree angle so my everyday piano lamp just slides off. I turn the room light up and this helps for a while but a good clean light above the music desk is preferred. Does anyone know of an inexpensive though effective lamp that might clip or somehow attach to the lid (remember the lid is on that angle) or possibly attach to another part of the piano? Your advice appreciated!......Roy

Don't they make desk lamps that grab onto the side of the desk and clamp there? Maybe you could work with one of those.
Failing that, maybe you could find a good floor lamp with a gooseneck that will throw light where you aim it.

I would think that a 'large clipboard clip'-style gooseneck lamp would mar the lid's finish less than the 'screw-in clamp'-style lamps. I'd attach it either to the lid or to the music desk back.
Alternatively you could get an 'Itty Bitty Book Lamp' normally used for reading in bed at night (sold in bookstores), connect it to an AC adapter, and attach it to your sheet music.

Good specialist lighting shops generally have those lamps which are intended to go above pictures. One could be easily attached to the front panel (although you may then be unable to close the lid). Alternatively, there are plenty of clip-on 'Anglepoise'-type lamps around which could be clipped on and off. If the piano's cheek blocks are wide enough, a small halogen desk lamp can be directed at the music. Or hold a small flashlight between your teeth...
