Our church's piano has a decal on lid that says it is a 'Thomas E. McCausland Upright Grand, Pittsburgh PA' Have had no success in finding anything on that name. SN# is 41682. I am guessing that it was made around 1920 as the first tuning date written inside is 1923. Action is by 'Seaverns Piano Action Co., Cambridge Mass.' Still in great shape and still used weekly. Anyone ever heard of it?

Is that *really* your name? You may have better luck on soc.motss than rec.music.makers.piano!

There is no mention of it in the Pierce Atlas, so my guess would be that it is a private label name used by a dealer. That would mean there is no way of determining who actually built the piano.

It may still be working, but it is definitely living on borrowed time. Sounds to me like your church needs to get themselves a new piano. Don't hang on to that one thinking it is worth anything as an antique of such - it isn't, nor will it ever be.

The thought of keeping it for antique purposes never entered our minds. Have kept it in excellent condition over the years - straps, hammers, etc. Had it tuned this week. Tuner remarked that it has a richness in sound moreso than most grands he tunes and that in his years of tuning (and playing) experience he knows of only 3 other pianos in this area that come close to it in sound. As long as we can keep it alive, we will do so. All we were wanting was to find out something about its manufacture. Thanks for your input.

This is just the cynic in me, and I'm not accusing your tech of doing this, but one of the oldest tricks in the book is to tell the owner of an old piano how wonderful it is every time you come to tune it so that you've set the stage for the expensive rebuild when it finally goes. It's much easier to talk someone into paying out for repairs you already see coming up when you've 'softened them up for the kill' so to speak. Otherwise, I'm glad it's serving you well, and hope you get to enjoy it for many more years.
