I'm planning to get a digital so I can play out & late at night, & will probably get the Kurzweil SP88x or the Yamaha P-80. The Kurzweil sounds OK, but the Yamaha is lighter & has a slightly deeper action. I find the Yamaha sound way too thin, bright & tinny. I'm wondering if someone could recommend a good piano module: a friend mentioned the GEM but I haven't seen it in stores. If I can't find better, I suppose the P-80 with a Kurzweil mini module (assuming it's got the same sound) saves 14 lbs. or so.

Any help from you digital experts?

As an alternative to a hardware piano module, consider a software piano. Listen to the 3 demo pieces of this software-based sampled piano, it sounds pretty good for $199 list price.

Musiciansfriend.com has it in stock for $139.99

Pretty hard to take the computer around town. Perhaps my best bet is a piano module & a controller, like the Studiologic 880.

what are you doing out? If your playing with an ensemble then the 'Yamaha sound way too thin, bright & tinny' is exactly what you need. I personally never had a problem with the yamaha sound (I wanna get one as a matter of fact), certainly if you like the action on that I'd go for it, the SL-880 is far from perfect (unless you can get an old action, but you'll be lucky if you do). I haven't been around enough modules to say what is really good or not, everyone has their preferences.

Er, what did you hear the P-80 through (very important question) it's quite possible that the tinnyness was attriubtable to the speakers or headphones you heard it through, a decent PA, and some eq is guaranteed to give the sound more 'balls'. Trust me on this one (as owner of a PA, some eq and some synths).

What amplification do you intend to use btw?
