piano moving costs

does anyone know what's a fair and usual price to pay for moving an upright grand piano (4'7' tall x 5'4' wide) approximately 100 miles? i'm just looking for a ballpark price to see if it would make sense for me to purchase a piano from a private party in another city. no stairs are involved at either location. any input you can offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks. my email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Who's moving the rest of your stuff? Also, what is an 'upright grand'?

You may be able to have the piano loaded on the truck that is moving the rest of your stuff, and then have movers at the other end take off the piano and set it up correctly. This assumes that the movers that are moving the rest of your stuff can't handle a piano, and maybe they can.

I've had a grand piano moved about 20 miles for $230. No stairs, but a grand takes 3 people and an upright would only take 2 people.

Randy, There are quite a few variable that apply. Different parts of the country are more expensive than others. Is the company truck already going in the direction of your move. How quickly do you need the move made.

I'd call local moving companies and piano dealers and get quotes from them.
